"

An extensive network to measure meterologic and hydrologic

parameters has been installed throughout and near the 3,300 square

mile project area where cloud seeding began last December. Definite

results will take time but the research appears promising.

Among other pilot projects are those underway in the northern

Great Plains of the Dakotas and in the Lake Tahoe Basin of California

and Nevada. We helieve the latter effort will be of particular value

providing added inflow to Pyramid Lake, a major resource of the

Indian reservation there.

The North Platte Pilot project in Wyoming is planned to employ

"second generation" techniques in a less opportune winter seeding

area and will be closely integrated with local wateruser activities.

The San Angelo project in the Concho River basin of central Texas

will test seeding techniques for warm summer clouds that normally

would be too small to produce large amounts of rainfall.

Cloud seeding in the Flathead River basin above Hungry Horse

reservoir 1n Montana was suspended very early this winter when a

heavy snowcover made it apparent that a normal runoff could be

expected. This is the fifth year of seeding in this area and

it appears to be most effective.

One thing which must be borne in mind 1n weather modification

efforts. Man can only supplement the work of nature in this field

and then only when atmospheric conditions are right. These conditions

rarely prevail during periods of immediate need. Thus it is imperative

3.....'7~~

6
