Backftow is availa!>le as far north as 108th Street to supply the <br />har!>or district of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Torrance, Compton <br />and the West Basin MLlnicipal Water District. <br />The Santa Monica !>ranch extends in a westerly and southwest- <br />erly direction from the Eagle Rock tower 24.5 miles to connect <br />with the Santa Monica water system at the city's Arcadia reservoir. <br />Along this pipe line there He two connections to the Glendale <br />system, three to the Burbank s)'stem, including a short lateral in <br />Kenneth Road, two to the Los Angeles city system, one to Beverly <br />Hills, and one to Santa Monica. The two Los Angeles connections <br />are for emergency :-5ervice only. <br /> <br />Sall Diego aqllcdl/ct <br /> <br />In addition to the upper feeder and its branches, the distribution <br />system includes the northerly half of the San Diego aqueduct sup- <br />pl,\"ing untreated water to the constituents of San Diego County <br />Water Authority. As one of the terms of annexation, the District <br />agreed to assume payment of one half the cost of the line over a <br />period of 30 years, and to take over the operation and maintenance <br />of the northerly half of the system. The District portion of the line <br />extends 36.3 miles southerly from the west portal of San Jacinto <br />tunnel to a point near the north end of the San Luis Rey steel <br />siphon in San Diego Count,\". This portion inclLldes 34.8 miles of <br />precast concrete pipe line varying from 48 to 96 inches in diameter, <br />a 6-foot tunnel 0.9 mile in length, and the San Jacinto regulating <br />reservoir with a usable capacity of 1,400 acre-feel. <br /> <br />Constructiun. nf Ow d-istt&ibutiou s?l.~l-cm <br /> <br />Construction of the distribution system to serve the thirteen <br />original constituents of the District was completed in ,lull' 1941- <br />Following the annexation of Coastal Municipal Water District in <br />June 1942, the first enlargement of the system took place with the <br />extension of the Orange County feeder from Santa Ana to the <br />Coast Highway at Corona del Mar. This extension was completed <br />in February 1944. Metropolitan Water District forces constructed <br />a 700-foot connecting line from the Orange County feeder to serve <br />the City of Erea, which annexed to the Coastal District in Septem- <br />ber 1946. Construction of the San Diego aqueduct from the west <br />portal of San Jacinto tunnel to San Vicente reservoir in San <br />Diego County was completed by the U.S. Navy in November 1947. <br />
