About

4,700 acres of the total are within the Stage One area, with 3,500 acres

irrigated and 1,200 acres unirrigated. Consequently, the Stage One area

contains about 2,800 acres of irrigated land that are not within the

boundaries of the Reed Wash study area. The remaining 5,300 acres in the

study area are outside the Stage One area, including 3,700 acres of

unirrigated land north of the Government Highline Canal and 1,600 acres of

irrigated land south of the Kiefer Extension from which they are served.

The present monitoring system is designed around the Reed Wash study

area, with supplemental data in the rest of Stage One. With the monitoring

program an attempt has been made to delineate the quality and quantity of

both groundwater and surface water.

Observation Wells

In order to show the chronology of the drilling program, the wells will

be discussed according to the date they were drilled. Map #1295-417-807

shows the location of these wells. The letter-number designation (AP-5l) is

the field number used during drilling and the 5 unit combination (146 M8) is

based on the road coordinate system used in Mesa County in which whole

numbers are used increasing each mile to the east and letters are used

increasing each mile to the north. For example 146 M8 would be 14.6 miles

east of the Utah State Line and 12.8 miles north of the base line (A road).

In 1974, a system of 63 ground-water observation ~'ells was installed in

the Reed Wash/Peck and Beede Wash area. The wells are located on a grid of

about .5 mile, with some adjustments for topography, right-of-way, and ease

3
