0029n

-11

Land Resource Groups. In an effort to retain national consistency, both

definitionally and quantitatively, the data were prorated to the 1964
Agricultural Census's major land use totals by LRG pbrtions of States.
At the time this inventory was being developed, the 1964 Agricultural
Census was the most current land use data available at the.LRG level. The.
1969 Agricultural Census is not yet available. Irrigation is included in
the land inventory for allLRG's. Projections of private irrigation .develop-
ment to 1980, and those Federal projects both authorized and fUnded as.of

June 30, 1968, were added to the reported inventory. Estimates were made

for losses of irrigated land through groundwater depletion for the period
.beyond 1980, and reductions in the agricultural land base were also made
for losses through the conversion to non-agricultural land uses. Sources

for the irrigation data were the Bureau of Reclamation, the Texas. River

Basin Commission Study Report, and other sources within ERS,. Sources for

the agricultural land base reduction included the Departments of Housing

and Urban Development, Transportation, and other agencies in Interior.

Projected Crop Productivity is the third input data subsystem. Projected
yields were computed for all crops by SRG within.LRG. The projections.were
developed from historical State data published by the Statistical Reporting
Service of the Department of Agriculture and from U.S. projections provided
by the ERS Projections Committee. The projected yields reflect, among
other considerations, the effects of improved technology over time.

The fourth input subsystem--Production Cost Data--provides estimates

for all major and most minor crops. The data were collected with the

assistance of the Division's Field Resource Groups and includes studies performed

j:~-:..;...i.,

~~

<.;",:..:c..:

~jj
~~~;~
~l~~i~
F~;:
f'''!1i'?'
;;fff.~~
~~'t;~
_.%t.~y,
rll
i
Ii
~ii~;
~~~!le~~ii~l!~~~

~~;~{~t~t~!f~~i~1}~llj!I~~~4~~tf:
