Net exports are computed from estimates <br /> <br />of imports and exports, and generally reflect a declining ~hare of total <br /> <br />U.S. production. These export levels are predicated on the current outlook <br /> <br />for U.S. trade policies. Projected feeding efficiencies dnd feeding rates <br /> <br />for various livestock types are an important element in the national frame- <br /> <br />work, since feeding rates and projected livestock production determine the <br /> <br />requirements for feed grains, high protein feed, and roughages. Little <br />change from current feeding efficiencies was projected to 1980, and.only <br /> <br />moderate improvement was projected from 1980 to 2020. <br /> <br />The second input subsystem--Projected Agricultural Resource Base-- <br /> <br />develops a land inventory from which the projected agricultural resource <br /> <br />base is developed. The inventory was compiled at a soil capability class- <br /> <br />subclass level (SRG) within a geographic area (LRG) level. Land Resource <br />Groups are geographic areas with similar topographical features, climatic <br /> <br />conditions, farming types, and cropping patterns and are considered to be <br /> <br />the appropriate geographic units for analysis. Soil Resource Groups (SRG) <br /> <br />are defined in terms of the Soil Conservation Service'sclass~subclass <br /> <br />designation and include an additional code to reflect an irrigated or non- <br /> <br />irrigated status. SRG's are intended to reflect variations in productivity <br /> <br />of various soil types within an LRG. The land inventory data were taken <br /> <br />from two sources. Type I studies for which data were available and a <br /> <br />special survey of sample counties. Type I studies from which land inventory <br /> <br />data were derived include .the Missouri, Columbia-North Pacific, Ohio, Upper <br />Mississippi, and North Atlantic regions. Sample county data for the remaining <br /> <br />areas of the United States were collected with the assistance.of the Soil <br /> <br />Conservation Service. The total inventory provides a measure of the rela- <br /> <br />tionship of the cropping patterns and yields by Soil Resource Groups within <br /> <br />~t:: <br />
