The Water Department handles all of
its functions ranging from accounting
to personnel, and is directed by a
full-time Manager appointed by the Board,
which in turn, is appointed to six-year
overlapping terms by the Mayor. The de-
partment employs some 750 persons, who
have civil-servke-type employment pro-
tection.
The Department provides water for
811,000 people living in a 275-square-
mile area in and around Denver, who use

some 62 billion gailons of water each year,
or 229 gallons per day per person. De-
spite the Wafer Department's ongoing pro-
gram urging water conservation, individual
consumption is expected to rise to 245 gal-
lons per day by the year 2010, because of
the increased use of wdter"using devices
in the home, office and industry.
Of the predicted population increase in
the metropolitan area from) miliion to 2.3
million by the year 2010, Denver's Water
Department will be serving 1.8 million.
