Nationwide Rivers Inventory

In 1966, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (P.L. 90-542) was passed by
Congress for the purpose of placing some of the Nation's best remaining
free-flowi ng and natural river resources under pennanent protection.
\~hi1 ea number of ri vershave beeni ncl uded in the National vlj1 d and
Scenic Rivers System, a systematic approach to such designations has
been lacking.

In February, 1975, HCRS i niti a ted an inventory to identify those ri vers
and river segments that are in a relatively natural and undeveloped con-
dition. The western study, started early in 1979, was just completed
for Arizona, California and Nevada, and identifies 95 rivers and river
segments encompassing about 5200 miles. National designation is not
the sole purpose of the inventory and more detailed information, parti-
cularly relating to features of each river segment, must. be gathered
before a judgement can be made as to the national significance.

C-56
