PART C.6

DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY
ACTIVITY HIGHLIGHTS
SEMI-ANNUAL REPORT
TO .
PACIFIC SOUTHWEST INTER-AGENCY COMMITTEE
(January 1, 1980 - June 30, 1980)

Report on Utility Generating Additions

The Economic Regulatory Administration has released a staff report summarizing
data on the projected additions to electric generating capacity of U. S.
utilities for the 10-year period, 1979-1988.

Copies are available from ERA's Office Public Information, U. S. Department
of Energy, 2000 M St., NW, Washington, DC 20461.

Imperial Valley Geothermal Plant To Be
Supported by DOE Federal Funding

DOE will negotiate a contract with the San Diego Gas and Electric Company for
construction of a 50-megawatt geothermal binary demonstration power plant
near Heber, CA, in the Imperial Valley, it was announced on March 20 by
DOE's San Francisco Operations Office in Oakland.

The plant capital and 2-year demonstration costs are estimated at $122 million.
DOE is being requested to pay one-half the costs.

Primary purpose of the plant is to demonstrate the commercial viability of
generating electricity from moderate temperature geothermal resources, using
binary conversion technology. Binary systems use hot geothermal fluids to
vaporize a secondary fluid to drive a turbine.

San Diego Gas and Electric, together with the Imperial Irrigation District,
Southern California Edison, and the California Department of Water Resources
as participants, and the Electric Power Research Institute and others as
contributors, submitted a proposal to DOE for the design, construction and
operation of such a demonstration plant.

The integrated, commercial-scale power plant will include the geoth~rmal
field system, fluid transmission system, conversion system, electric gen-
erating plant, geothermal fluid treatment and spent fluid disposal facilities,
and a tie-in to the Impertal'Irrigation District transmission network.

Construction Begins This S~\T!mer Or,
Geothermal Power Plant in New Mexico

The Department of Energy has given a formal go-ahead for construction of a
50-megawatt geothermal power demonstration plant on the Baca Ranch in Sandoval
County, New Mexico. Construction activities are scheduled to begin this
summer, with operation expected in 1982.

C-44
