The meeting
was very informative and of mutual benefit in achieving the
objectives of PSIAC and providing the Forest Service with back-
ground information that they can use in support of thei r water
yield improvement program.

Vern Valantine prepared a report of this meeting of which I am
enclosing a copy. The following is a summary of the more signi-
ficant items discussed:

1. The Rocky Mountain Region has an active ongoing program
in water yield improvement. Experiments have been conducted for
many years and a pilot project has been developed in a 10,000-acre
spruce, fir, and lodgepole pine area in Wyoming.

a. A 20-percent water yield increase is possible through
certain cutting patterns. In the pilot project clear-cut strips
will be used to .concentrate snow.

b. The pilot project's first cutting will be in 1982 and
will be a minimum of a 5-year project.

c. The objective of the pilot project will be to identify
and quantify the increased water yield.

C-12
