The river then

flows northward into COlorado, t b.ence north-west'cm,rd and vlestward and

finally it crosses the State Line again, flowing in a southwesterly

direction entering the Rio Grande a short distance below the Colorado-

New ~!exico State Line. Certain lands are irrigated above the carwon

mouth. In this study those l'-\llds are not given further consideration

since the irrigation development took place at a very early date and

has been continually prac'ticed without material change in acreace.

Irrigation below the canyon mouth began about 1853 with the construc-

tion of the Acequia Nadre. After this ditch was constructed a number

of otmr direct flaw ditches were built. The principal direct flow

ditches exis'ting Dt the present time are the Acequia H!\dre, which

waters land in both New Hexico and Color!\do; the Hanzal1l3.res, which

serves lands lying largely in Colorado; the l'IlUi riles" which is used

on lands located wholly wi thin Colorado and the following smaller

ditches:

NEVI MEn.cO

Cerrito
Plaza de Arriba
Plaza del ~ledi 0
Arellano
Trujillo
Penasquito
AlIres

-5-
