UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR WATER AND POWER RESOURCES SERVICE UPPER COLORADO REGION NOTICE OF INITIATION OF INVESTIGATIONS Name of investigation: G1enwood-Dotsero Springs Unit - Colorado River Water Quality Improvement Program Location of investigations: In the Colorado River Basin in Garfield and Eagle Counties of west-central Colorado. Date investigation initiated: Covered in reconnaissance scope an Appraisal Report dated June 1976. Feasibility investigations started October 1979. Probable date of completion of feasibility report, May 1984. 1. Scope of investigations: The study is concerned primarily with identifying possible means of controlling total dissolved solids contributions to the Colorado River along a 16-mi1e reach between its confluence with the Eagle River and the junction with the Roaring Fork River. The study will be conducted through use of a Professional Services Contract and under the mu1ti-objective planning guidelines set forth in the Principles .and Standards for planning water and land resources. 2. Problems: The G1enwood-Dotsero Springs constitute the second largest point source of salinity in the Colorado River system. The combined discharges contribute annually approximately 25,000 acre-feet of water containing over 500,000 tons of total dissolved solids. The salinity of the Colorado River has been increasing throughout the basin as a result of man's use and reuse of the river. About 10 million tons of salt are now carried by the river each year causing economic losses to water users in lower crop yields and increased treatment costs. 3. Prospective solutions: Prospective solutions will involve plans for collection and conveyance of saline water, treatment of the saline water, and disposal of brine effluent. 4. Participation by local, State, and Federal agencies: Interested parties are requested to forward, within 30'days, an expression of interest in participating in the investigations; a summary of pertinent hydrologic, geologic, environmental, or other data that can be made available for planning use; a statement from agencies concerning any jurisdiction they may have over aspects of the project; and a listing of any initial comments, suggestions, or concerns relating to the project.
