There are approximately 2-1/2 million acres of grazing land in the <br /> <br />Las Animas County. The production of feed crops on the cultivated lands <br /> <br />is essential to the livestock and dairy industries. <br /> <br />11. The 1940 census shows that the irrigated land of Las Animas <br />County is divided among 482 farms, with an average area per farm of about <br />66 acres. or the irrigated farms about 65 percent are operated by owners <br /> <br />and managers and 35 percent by tenants. <br /> <br />12. Transportation. - The project area is adequately served by rail, <br /> <br />highway and air transportation. Main line railroads are the Denver and <br /> <br />Rio Grande Western; the AtchiSon, Topeka and Santa Fe; and the Colorado <br /> <br />and Southern. Tille principal highways are Federal Highways U. S. N1lIUbers <br /> <br /> <br />350, 160, 85 and 87; and Colorado Highways N1lIUbers 12, Ill, 238, 206 and <br /> <br />239. <br /> <br />NEED FOR DEVELOPiJENT <br /> <br />13. Irrigation. - Lands below the proposed Trinidad Reservoir are <br /> <br />in the semi-arid zone with an average annual precipitation of slightly <br /> <br />less than 14 inches. Dry-farm agriculture, which is practiced in the <br /> <br />eastern part of the county, depends entirely upon precipitation.
