East of Trinidad, the river flows through a. broad valley <br />for a.bout 35 miles before entering a narrow canyon more than 100 miles <br /> <br />in length, thence through more .pen rolling country to its confluence <br /> <br />with the Arkansas River near the town of Las Animas, Colorado, about 157 <br /> <br />miles below Trinidad. Irrigation which is practiced extensively within <br /> <br />the Purgatoire watershed is confined mainly t. the valley immediately <br /> <br />below Trinidad and adjacent lands. <br />4. Climate. - The project area ranges in elevation from 5,500 feet <br /> <br />te 5,750 feet above sea level. The climate is semi-arid with an aver- <br /> <br />age annual rainfall of 13.8 inches. The average annual temperature as <br /> <br />recorded at Trinidad is 48.3 degrees and ranges from a maximum of 99 <br /> <br />degrees w minimum of -26 degrees. The average annual frost-free grow- <br /> <br />ing season is 167 days. <br />5. Population. - The population for Las Animas County in 1950 was <br />25,918. Of this total 12,200 persons resided in the City of Trinidad. <br /> <br />The population trend in the past three decades has been consistently down- <br /> <br />ward. The total population of Las Animas County decreased by one-third, <br /> <br /> <br />from 38,975 in 1920 t. 25,918 in 19~0. Most of this decline is attribut- <br /> <br />able to population losses in agricultural and mining areas outside the <br /> <br />r.itv of T~;nin~rl_ <br />
