..

CG1235

.

.

"'1

WATER SUFPIX

79. i/ater resources. - The source of irrigation water for the
Trinidad project is the Purgatoire River, a typical mountain and plains
stream. The drainage above the project area has steep, rocky slopes and
rapid runoff results from torrential rains. The mountain snow, melting
in the spring, usually produces a high sustained flow. From about May to
October intense rains occur frequently and produce floods of considerable
peak and volume. Runoff from rain floods seldom lasts more than a few
days ~
80. The total flow of the Purgatoire River at Trinidad is adequate
for the 19"OO irrigated acres in the project area if controlled and re-
duced to a divertible rate of now. The existing erratic flows result in
considerable diversion in excess of immediate requirements during periods
of hiGh streamflow and lengthy periods of shortage during low streamflow
periods.
8l. A gaging station has been maintained at Trinidad since l896,
but records are complete only since 1916. An automatic recorder was
placed in operation in 1922. Discharge records are available in the
Biennial Reports of the Colorado State Engineer and in U. S. Geological
Survey:/ater Supply Papers. Other Purgatoire River records available
