THE AMITY MUTUAL IRRIGATION COMPANY

1581

l

Headgate diversions of the Amity totaled 72,000 acre feet.
most of which was durIng the first four months. lA1ly 7000 acre
feet was available during August. September and October. This
reflects the drought condition that existed in the latter part of
the season so the Amity and other ditches below John Martin dam,
in accordance with provisions of the .Arkansas River Compact. re.
quested 100 cu. ft. per second of water which nonMIty belongs to
District 157 to be passed through the dam afterrthe storage season
started November 1st. Some effort was made by the River Adminis-
tration to deliver this water, but on November 8th, water which
was on demand both above and below the dam was sluiced to make 8
small pond of water above the dam. Immunity was then claimed to
.. Pessing Instructions", and all 67 district prioritIes including
the 100 c.f.s. was used above. Before anything was done about
the situation, cold weather caused the ditches below the dam to
withdraw their demand. During the 12 years that the Compact has
been in effect, water has been called to the full 100 c.(.s. very
few times. If water has been available in storage later in the
season. it is not called for. This water IS called for on prior-
ity basis. Ordinarily the Amity must wElit on more senior approp-
erators before they can participate in the 100 c. f. s. delivery.
The delivery of this water is important to down stream users and
should be settled with all possible speed.
Our Reservoir system is now in very good working condition.
Work started two years ago on widening the upper end of the
Kicking-Bird and re-aligning this canal was carried on thr<?lJgh
the Lone Wolf canal and Mud Lake to the Nee No She. Additional
work was done on the Commanche to bring it back to proper carry-
ing capacity. The Pawnee had to be reconstructed, havina been com-
pletely filled with blow dirt. Maintenance on the canals tlhat SR'
used infrequently in this area is difficult on account of wind
erosion.

The flow of the Arkansas River at Les Animas was measured
at 92,500 acre feet qnd the Purgatoire at Las Animas at 31,770
acre feet, making a total of 124,300 acre feet at the intake of
th~ Reservoir. Water measured at the outlet guage below John Mar-
tIn dam totaled 149.500 acre feet, about 25,000 acre feet unac.
counted for. Rule Creek, which is not regularly measured arid win-
ter flow, may account for some of this over-run but the gauging
stations at Las Animas might be improved. This discrepancy is
citeCl to show what some of the problems would be with a permanent
pool in John Martin and should be kept in mind when negotiations
are opened on the Purgatoire and Pueblo storages. Ditehes innDis-
trict 67 this year diverted a total of 157,085 acre feet, and" the
flow across the State Line during, irdgation season was approxi-
mately 83,000 acre feet and for the year 124,000 acre feet.

Regarding the Purgatoire proJect, negotiations for the trans-
fer of the Model Storage decree for 20,000 acre feet of water to
the anticipated Purgatoire Olannel reservoirha, been delayed pend-
ing settlement of some differences on distribution among: local,wa-
ter users. Several dawn stream ditches includuhg the Amit)r have
indicated that they would oppose this transfer.

-5-
