ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1962

PRESIDENT'S

REPORT

TO
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

To The Directors and Stockholders:
Rainfall throughout 1962 was below normal but was distribut_
ed, 50 that with the irrigation available was sufficient to pro-
duce a crop. probably above the average yield.
The cold early in the winter was followed by mild weather and
sufficient moisturf" in March and April to prepare the g,round fOT
seeding.
Hesvy rains in the Lamar arca the 4th of July produced ex-
cessive run-off in Wiley, Pleasant Valley and May Valley and I:IIUS-
cd four breaks in the Amity. ]his storm did nOt prodtlce,sl1')' stCII_
sge in the Reservoir but later in July ahout the 24th, heavy rain!>
upstream produced stream flow in the Arkansas and storage was de_
clared in John Martin Reservoir July 26th'.
Water supply this year was characteri%ed by low storage
throughout the winter, which was used completely in April. The
River was then fairly uniform during first half of May, but often
at the stage when Amity had to take the fluctuation causing some
iTTegul9rit~ in our supply. No major flOOdS occured to supply
summer storage, but small floods boosted the river above, and rain
below reduced the demand of ditches durihg June and July, and
helped prolong the runs. By August the river was extremely low
end remain!!d that way until the later part of Octob!!r. Rainfall
averaged less than an inch any month and was very spotted after
the July down-pours.
During th!! low p!!riod wat!!r was supplied east of Sand Creek
from the .reservoirs of the Great Plains. By cleaning the outlet
ditches and cl~aning channels connectil':lg the Reservoirs, the lakes
were dnrinea to the lowest level in many years. More than 30,000
acre feet in all was released from the lakes. for use this season
and this was more than 40% of our headgate diver~ion.
It was April 9th before any water was released from John Mar-
Dam. On that date storage amounted to 35.,910 acre feet. This had
all been accumulated during the winter at steady but low flow
rate. A daily average of 115 cu. ft. in November, 67 cu. ft. in
December, 61 cu. ft. in January, 129 cu. ft. In February and 82
cu. ft. in March. The Amity was supplied fromthe reservoir until
May 1st. when John Martin dam was dry. During April 12,196 acre
feet was diverted at our head&ate.
From May 1st untilllay 18th we dependedonriver.flow. On the
18th a small amount of storage accumulated and with inflow almost
equal to outflnw, this storage held until May 30th. Maximum stor-
age during this period was 4500 acre feet, or about 2 day's re-
lease. We depended on the river flow from then until July 26th,
when with a small accumulation of storage and favorable conditions,
almost 12.000 acre feet was shown in storage at one time. This
lasted until August 10th by which time the river was very low and
then there WllS no water under oLlr priority in the river until late
in OCtober when the river stsrted to increase.

-4-
