Salinity Control Tangible evidence of salinity buildUp. Progress on the four units authorized by the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act (Public Law 93.320. June 24, 1974) for fiscal year 1982 is as follows: Construction on the Grand Valley Stage I area is nearing comple- tion. The remaining work primarily includes placing 8 Y2 miles of laterals in pipe out of a total of about 30 miles. Monitoring is continu- ing to verify the salinity reduction resulting from the construction program. Stage II investi- gations are underway, including drilling holes and testing soil and water to define salinity mechanisms, and studying alternative plans to reduce the flow of saline water to the river. On the Paradox Valley Unit, specifications are being prepared to award a contract for drilling and testing a deep injection well. The contract looking downstream along Government Highline Canal. is scheduled to be awarded in fiscal year 1983. Another contract was awarded for consulting services during the drilling and testing operation of the deep well. Five addi. tional ground water collection wells are being drrlled In the well field for a total of 23 wells. The status reporf on the Las Vegas Wash Unit was completed in October 1982. It recommends proceeding with construction of a bypass channel to convey low salinity indus. tfial waste water past an area of highly saline soil, thus preventing ground water infiltration and salt pickup. The Crystal Geyser Unit has been deferred indefinitely. Feasibility studies are progressing on the 10 salinity control units under Public Law 96.375. The planning (feasibility) report for the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit has been completed Planning reports for the Uinta Basin, McElmo Creek. and Big Sandy River Unit are scheduled . Studies for the Glenwood.Dotsero Springs, Price.san Rafael Rivers, and Dirty Devil River are continuing, but the planning reports are not scheduled for completion until fiscal year 1985, fiscal year 1986, and fiscal year 1987, respectively. The Meeker Dome Un if is being monitored to determine the effect of plu99in9 the leaky oil and gas exploratory wells before attempting further studies. Present indications are that plugging the wells will eventually stop most of the saline water flowing into the river. No further studies are expected on the LaVerkin Springs or Lower Virgin River units since the concluding reports were completed. 9
