c

18

B.8 Replace pedestrian and maintenance
bridges

Responsible lor making this happen:
Denver Parks and Recreation (Contact: Neil 5perandeo,
964-2536 )
Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (Contact: Ben
U rbonas, 455-6277)

Time lrame: Beginning in 1995.

Briel description and background:
The six pedestrian/ maintenance bridges crossing the
Platte in Denver need to be replaced and a systematic
maintenance and replacement program established. In
replacing most of the bridges, abutments can remain.
Under some circumstances, parts of bridges could serve
as fishing platforms.

Location: Along the River corridor.

Benelits: The bridges need to be replaced because they
are in poor condition. New bridge design will reduce the
icy conditions now common on the bridges due to the
shadows cast by the heavy bridge structures.

Resources:
Urban Drainage will cost share: 375%, Denver could
ha ve $200-300,000 to spend on this per year over severa I
years.
Denver is requesting funds starting with the 1996 budget
for this purpose. Urban Drainage is also requesting
funds to match Denver (at the 375% match) It is estimat-
ed that, on average, it would cost approximately
$150,000 per bridge for superstructure replacement.
Other possible funding will be explored.

Next Steps:
Determine schedule for bridge replacement.

'ft,,,c'-atjl.Jt~ '200(J: A Vi~hm ("". the S"uth 'Platte 'RilJCI'
