00
~
CD
( ~'..
c")
c:

,';/

,
-,-

Chemical Plant alternative is also comDlicated. Water will be
collected at Dotsero by alluvial wells and treated by reverse
osmosis with the brines (an estimated 25% by volume)
landfilled near Dotsero. Treated water will be piped to
Glenwood Springs and added to the saline water collected at
the spring mouth. The mixed treated and saline water will be
piped to the New Castle area and treated by reverse osmosis
(the brines well be an estimated 257, by volume) with the
treated water released to the Colorado River. The brines
generated by the reverse osmosis plant would be sold to a
chemical plant for extraction of useable chemicals (Figure 5).

Stockpile alternative is similar to the first two alter-
natives. Water would be removed from Dotsero by alluvial
wells, from Glenwood Springs by collection at the spring
mouth and from South Canyon by surface collection. It would
be piped to New Castle, where it would be treated and
disposed of by evaporation ponds. All the water collected
would be removed from the stream (Figure 6).

Utility alternative is the same as the Stockpile alternative,
except the water would be treated by reverse osmosis at or
near Grand Junction, and the treated .water delivered to a
power plant for use in the cooling system (Figure 7).

Comparison of Alternatives

The consumptive use of each alternative along several reaches
of the Colorado River is listed in Table 1, where it is
compared to the amounts of existing rights on the river. The
existing rights on the river are listed in Appendix A by
reach. The lists were derived from the 1978 stream alpha list
derived from the Tabulation of Decreed Water Rights published
by the Colorado Division of \~ater Resources (State Engineer's
Office) .

ct>

Leonard Rice Consulting Water Engineers.
