c'

was estimated using the same procedure as the 1981-85 report. That procedure
consisted of multiplying the number of animals in each reporting area by the average use
rate in gallons/head/day (gphpd) taken from the Midwest Plan Service Structures and
Environmental Handbook, 1977. The reporting areas are the same as those used for
stockponds. For this report, the following rates were used:
Livestock gphpd
Cattle 10
Sheep 2
Hogs 3

...
"l

The number of animals is reported on a per county basis as part of the state agricultural
statistics. For counties which do not fall entirely within the Upper Colorado River basin,
the ratio of the GIS county irrigated crop acreage to the CAS county irrigated crop acreage
was computed. This ratio was multiplied by the county total livestock data to estimate the
portion of the county livestock within the Upper Colorado River basin. The county
statistics were aggregated into the basin reporting areas. A summary of the livestock
consumptive use is presented in exhibit 13.

Municipal and Industrial
The municipal and industrial water consumptive use is divided into three categories:
mineral, thermal electric power, and other. Mineral resource consumptive use,is defined
as the water used for mineral production. Thermal electric power consumptive use
includes the water used at the powerplants and that used to transport material to the
powerplants (such as coal slurry pipelines). Other M&I consumptive use consists of
urban, rural, and industrial uses. The consumptive use for thermal electric power was
estimated from records provided by the various power companies in the Colorado River
basin. Consumptive use for the remaining M&I categories were estimated from data
collected by the USGS and summarized in Estimated Use of Water in the United States in
1995, USGS Circular 1200. This information was reported by hydrologic unit and state for
1995. In previous reports, the ending year report was available for use. USGS has not
published the 2000 report and the data has not been made available to other agencies or
the public. The 2000 Census data was used to estimate the population in each hydrologic

6

. ....

, ,

"
