POPULATION.-' The population of Colorado at the time it
achieved territorial status in 1861 was about 25,000. By 1900 the
population had grown to 539,700 and has continued to grow since that
time in an orderly manner.

53, As shown in table 4, the population of the 13-county study area
was 370,529 at the time of the 1960 census. This total represented about
21.09 percent of the total population of Colorado and 0.21 percent of the
population of the United States. The 1960 population represents an
average annual increase of 2.73 percent over the 1950 population of
282,354. During the same period, the average annual percent increase
in population was 2.85 for Colorado as a whole and 1.71 for the United
States. The bulk of population increase of the basin area came from
growth of urban population in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, and
Pueblo, Pueblo County. Other areas showing significant percentage
increases were Canon City, Fremont County, East Canon, Fremont County;
Ivywild, El Paso County; and Manitou Springs, El Paso County. Additional
data on population are presented in paragraph 68.

TABLE 4. -- Area and Population of Counties
Within'the'Study Area - Arkansas River
Basin Upstream from John Martin Dam

Area PODulation
County (SQ. mi.) 1950 1960
Bent , 1,517 8,775 7,419
Chaf f ee~c 1,039 7,168 8,298
Crowley' 803 5,222 3,978
Custer-: 737 1,573 1,305
El Paso.", 2,158 74,523 143,742
Fremont 1,562 18,366 29,196
Huerfano- 1,578 10,549 7,867
Lake ,380 6,150 7,101
Las Animas 4,794 25,902 19,983
, , Lincoln 2,593 5,909 5,310
Otero 1,267 25,275 24,128
Pueblo 2,401 90,188 118,707
Teller 554 2,754 2,495
Total 21,383 282,354 370,529

54. EMPLOYMENT AND INCOME. - Employment.in the base study area is
an important segment of the Colorado total and, as indicated in table 5,
closely parallels that of the State as a whole.
