Colorado-Ute _ld be
able to use 12,000 acre-feet of industrial water for a proposed coal-

fired steam-electric. generation plant near Nucla. The reaaining 2,000

acre-feet of water would be used in the vicinity of Morwood aDd Maturita.

The reduction of 30,000 acre-feet of aunicipal aDd industrial water had

an adverse effect on the economic justification of the project.

To attempt to arrive at an economically justified plan, over 100 alter-

natives were studied during advance planning. Eventually, 23 of these

alternatives were selected as being representative of those studied. These

alternatives would have damsites at a variety of locations, both an and off

the San Miguel River, and acreages varying from ll,480 to 19,760.

Municipal and industrial supplies would range from lOO acre-feet to

28,000 acre-feet, the latter a hypothetical supply for which a potential

demand for only 14,000 acre-feet exists. The 28,000 acre-feet was included

in some of the alternatives to determine its effect on the economic

justification of those alternatives. The alternatives also focused on

conservation by upgrading the existing irrigation system or an improvement

of the yield from a high elevation runoff collection system.

During feasibility studies, the Corps of Engineers concluded that

some monetary benefits could result from controlling snowmelt floods.

11
