In addition to storing water released from

c::..

'Basin Canal the reservoir would store water of inflowing streams and

return flow from irrigated land. Irrigation water in Radium Reservoir

would be released into the West Fork of Dry Creek and then rediverted

approximately 3 miles farther downstream into the Paradox Canal, which

would then extend northwest about 17 miles to irrigate full service land

south of East Paradox Creek. A project lateral would branch from tbe

canal to serve project land north of the creek.

Saltado Reservoir would provide downstream protection from snowmelt

floods.

The reservoir would be operated for flood control based on

runoff predictions, but no capacity would be provided exclusively for

that purpose.

The project would deliver 14,000 acre-feet of water annually at

Naturita and Radium Reservoirs for municipal and industrial uses and

would also provide 30,000 acre-feet for those uses along the San Miguel

River.

If needed, water could be used by exchange upstream of Saltado

Reservoir.

The plan also could be modified to deliver municipal and

industrial water at other points, as the demand developed. No provision

was made for a cultural resources program.

Plan Reformulation

Advance planning studies on the San Miguel Project began in 1972 and

resulted in reformulation of the authorized plan and the creation of

numerous alternatives in an attempt to serve the needs of the project

area. In 1973, all planning activities were terminated at tbe request of

the Office of Management and Iludget to assess the project 's impact on

salinity in the Colorado River.

Subsequent soils analyses revealed

10
