The nearest major towns are Glenwood Springs
(the Garfield County seat) about 21 miles east of Silt and
Grand Junction (the Mesa County seat and largest community
in western Colorado) about 35 miles southwest of Parachute.

U.S. Interstate Highway 70 and the main line of the Denver
and Rio Grande Western Railroad traverse the project area
along the Colorado River, serving the local communities and
connecting them with points east and west. Colorado State
Highway 13 connects areas to the north with Interstate 70 at
Rifle while a system of county roads serves the areas south
of the ri ver.

The project area is located in a valley which begins about
6 miles east of Silt, where the Colorado River cuts through
a northwest-southeast trending ridge ~alled the Grand
Hogback, and extends to about 8 miles downstream from
Parachute where the river enters a series of low hills. The
south end of the Grand Hogback merges with the Huntsman

A-3
