GLEN ELDER UNIT - Solomon Division

The Glen Elder Unit, in north-central Kansas, lies along the
Solomon River in Osborne, Mitchell, Cloud, and Ottawa Counties. Glen
Elder Dam and Waconda Lake (capacity 976,000 acre-feet) immediately
above the town of Downs, will provide substantial benefits from flood
control, irrigation, municipal water supply, recreation, fish and wild-
life conservation, and pollution abatement. A total of 26,000 acres of
irrigable land will be provided a full water supply. Because of the
urgent need for the dam as a flood control feature, construction of the
dam was proposed on the basis of a report dated October .1961. The irri-
gation plan will be covered in a second part.

Accomplishments FY 1968

Construction of Glen Elder Dam was
approximately 97% complete at end
of fiscal year; relocation of the
.Missouri Pacific Railroad and con-
struction of Downs Dike and reha-
bilitation of Downs Disposal Plant
was completed.
Right-of-way acquisition and con-
struction of relocated U.S. 24 and
State Highways Nos. 181 and 128
continued, with surfac.ing oper-
ations started late in June.
Construction of Cawker City Dike and
Disposal Plant and county roads
were approximately 65% and 32%
complete respectively at the end
of the fiscal year. The first
section of reservoir clearing has
been completed and contracts were
awarded late in the fiscal year
for the remainder of the clearing
and the caretaker's residence.
Boat ramps are being constructed
in connection with recreational
facilities.
