'"or <br />Od~~~~ <br /> <br />. , <br /> <br />..,...., <br /> <br />GLEN ELDER UNIT - Solomon Division <br /> <br />The Glen Elder Unit, in north-central Kansas, lies along the <br />Solomon River in Osborne, Mitchell, Cloud, and Ottawa Counties. Glen <br />Elder Dam and Waconda Lake (capacity 976,000 acre-feet) immediately <br />above the town of Downs, will provide substantial benefits from flood <br />control, irrigation, municipal water supply, recreation, fish and wild- <br />life conservation, and pollution abatement. A total of 26,000 acres of <br />irrigable land will be provided a full water supply. Because of the <br />urgent need for the dam as a flood control feature, construction of the <br />dam was proposed on the basis of a report dated October .1961. The irri- <br />gation plan will be covered in a second part. <br /> <br />Program FY 1968 <br /> <br />Funds available - $13,134,050 <br />Complete construction of Glen <br />Elder Dam, Downs Dike and <br />rehabilitation of Downs Dis- <br />posal Plant, and relocation <br />of the railroad, county <br />bridge, and various utilities. <br /> <br />Continue acquisition of reservoir <br />right-of-way, clearing reservoir <br />areas, and relocation of U.S. 24 <br />and State highways. <br /> <br />Award contracts and start con- <br />struction on Cawker City Dike <br />and Disposal Plant, relocation <br />of county roads south of Cawker <br />City, the caretaker's residence <br />and recreational facilities. <br /> <br />'.~. .' .. '. <br /> <br />; . <br /> <br />Accomplishments FY 1968 <br /> <br />Expenditures - $11,624,999 <br />Construction of Glen Elder Dam was <br />approximately 97% complete at end <br />of fiscal year; relocation of the <br />.Missouri Pacific Railroad and con- <br />struction of Downs Dike and reha- <br />bilitation of Downs Disposal Plant <br />was completed. <br />Right-of-way acquisition and con- <br />struction of relocated U.S. 24 and <br />State Highways Nos. 181 and 128 <br />continued, with surfac.ing oper- <br />ations started late in June. <br />Construction of Cawker City Dike and <br />Disposal Plant and county roads <br />were approximately 65% and 32% <br />complete respectively at the end <br />of the fiscal year.
