Geography, history. economics and social behavior all affect the supply and demand of water in our
community. Below is an example of hOw some of these factors might come into play.

----
~

BUJE~
LAKE ;::: .8

~""'"
~ /"'\.
C ~
S'" RIvER -~
=-p\..p.. ~;:::.... Can you identify the source lor each
City? (CLUE: One source IS hidden but Young Marvin can help you.)

CityA
City B
CityC
CIty D

Splash River
Blue Lake
$plash River
Wells. tapping ground water. Note WA TER CYCLf,p.2. Capt Hydro Workbook.

What factors might allect each water source to make it more or less desirable for an adequate supply 01 good
water?
City A would suffer if: II C polluted the river, 2) excessive water was committed to C and other
cities and farms, 3) reduced flow of the river allowed the tidal actiOn to push biN:k the salinity barrier to
affect the river where A takes its supply. City B would suffer if: 1) rhe lakebecamepo/futed, 2) the
water demand exceeded the rate of natural replenishment. City C would wffer if; 1) excessive water
was exported from the river above their water intake, 2) their water demand exceeded the amount of
water that they were entitled to take. Downstream ust;rs also have rights to the river. City D would
suffer if: 1) the water table fel/below the point where the wellscoufd gain an adequate supply, 21 D's
water demand exceeded the potential ground water supply. 3) water recharging the water table introduced
pollutants into the water system. Conversely. the cities would benefit from anticipating and alleviating
any of the above problems_ A and C would particularly profit from the impoundment of the Splash
Rivet in 8 reservoir above C in order to maximize the use of the river.

If City A was settled 50 years before CIty C. what effect would the growth and development of C have on A's

waler supply?
IncreiJSing disposal of sewage by City C Into the river would eventually affect A's
water suppl.". The seventy of the problem would depend on several factors; the size of rile river, which
affects natural cleansing. the degree of C's sewage treatment and A 's water treatment. and the type and
degree of pollution of C's effluent, partl." dependent on C's industriaf wastes.

What could A do about this problem?

City A could upgrade Its water treatment. convince C to
improve Its $f!Wi1gt! treatment or the nature of its effluent, or seek an alternative or supplementary water
suppfy. Desalination of sea water might provide such a source. although that Is not without Its econ.
omic and environmental problems. To reduce the amount of supplementary water suppl." required, a
warer conservation program would be desirable.

027

-21-
