Social Science

Perhaps the key to the application of water conservation to the so-
cial sciences is the concept of social participation, again stressed in the
Course of Study, Not only can the social sciences provide additional
opportunities for cognitive and skills growth, but the affective domain
emerges as the critical area involved,
The social sciences serve as the threshold to life, as skills and know-
ledge acquired in other curricular areas are translated into meaningful
problem-solving experiences, It is here that the transition from theory
to practice becomes a reality and students begin to grasp the
appreciation of the value of their education, Social participation
implies not only the exposure of students to the problems of society,
but the chance for them to physically grapple with the problems as the
students move from observer to participant. The tasks need not be crit-
ical to the survival of mankind, but the experience of perfonning them
might well be.
Students who have the opportunity to solve problems at home and
in the community will become more effective problem solvers, Specifi-
cally, the acquisition of a new environmental ethic, plus the intellectual
tools to implement it, will prepare them to meet the challenge of
ecological reality, Whether that lesson is one of developing a water
conscience, or an energy conscience, really doesn't matter What does
matter is that the students become equipped to function with the ethic,
as well as sensitized to appreciate it.

LESSON NOTES:

Municipal Residential Water Consumption, p, 22..
The only "east-of-hills" community listed is Walnut Creek because the
data collected was based on billing office figures. The Walnut Creek business
office covers all or parts of the central Contra Costa communities of Alamo,
Danville, Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, San Ramon and Walnut Creek

A Community That Doesn't Confoml, p. 23.
The Watergate apartment complex opened its first two buildings, totalling
419 units, in April, 1972. By 1975, 1250 apartments were available.
Emeryville's population increased from 2550 in 1969 to over 4000 in 1975;
1600 of the new residents live in Watergate,

Water Consumption Suroey, p, 24,
Conceivably, some parents might regard this assignment as an invasion of
privacy, although no such cases were reported in the pilot classes. Numerous
possibilities exist to use this lesson, ranging from examining life styles (e,g"
type of dwelling) to correlating water consumption with isolated factors such
as family size or garden vegetation, Opportunities for related math lessons
abound,

, '

-20-
