To tind oui. take a one Quart
plaShC bottle, cut ofllhe top and invert it ihto
the bottom 01 the bottle, making sure that the
diameter 01 the large end of the funnel is the
same as the diameter 01 the rest of the bottle.
Attach the top with masking tape. Calibrate the
bottle in cenlimetres to measure the rainfall and
bury it so that the funnel is a few centimeters
above ground level. A ruler may also be used as
a dip Stick to measure the daily precipitation.
Record the results on the following graph.

I

I

,

o

DATE

RAINFALL

(Yfl3f)f5[Jf1}()

iVTTYT~~~

Construct two trays as shown. Putty the
cracks 10 make them water-tight. Pails
or glass lars may be used to collecllhe
fun-oil water.

A) Fill one tray With loose soil and the other with firmly packed soil. With both trays slightly tilted, water
each with the same amount with a sprinkling can_ How did the water How with each soil?

The water will be absorbed inro the loosely p<JCked soil but will run off quickly over the surface
of the firm soil.

WhiCh soli moved away laster? Why?

The loose soil will hold more water rhan the firm soil. Thus the water will flow over the firm
soil with more force and take the top soil with it. If the loose soil becomes sawrated. it will
then dislodge quickly. Slope, flow speed, and warer quanrity will all affect the erOjlon.

B) Fill both trays With SOli but cover one with sod. Water equally as before and observe the dlf1erence in
erosion and the run-off rate. Note the results:
PLAIN SOIL

With no vegeratlve cover, the water will run off quickly and carry loose soil With It.

0278

SOD

Sod. or any other vegetative cover, will ciJtch iJnd hold the warer.
and the effects of erosion.

rhus retarding the run-off

C) FIll both trays with soil but give one more slope than the other. What happened?

The greater the degree of slope, the faster the water will run off.

-13-
