"

PROBLEM: The future administration of the Arkansas River during flood

t\)
~ Compact Administration in December 1978. Oral progress reports would be
.....
en presented periodically during the study.

conditions would be improved if guidelines were available from which

operational decisions could be readily made, During high-flow periods,

potential flood waters could be detained in Pueblo Reservoir to prevent

downstream flooding. The flood waters would later be released at a

reduced discharge rate. Guidelines developed from this study would be

used to better determine where flood waters would have been utilized

downstream had Pueblo Reservoir not been constructed.

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to develop routed flood hydrographs at

several downstream locations uttltzing historical peak~discharge records,

The hydrographs would be developed on the basis that flood waters were

not detained in Pueblo Reservoir, All major tributa~y inflows and

diversion outflows would be' accounted for between Pueblo Reservoir and

John Martin Reservoir during each historical peak~ischarge event, In

addition, travel times fOr each historical peak~ischarge event would be

to accomodate travel times and flood conditions'between Pueblo Reservoir

determined for several downstream locations,

APPROACH: An existing re~~rvoir release routing model would be modified

and John Martin Reservoir. Historical flood hydrographs would be used

to calibrate the existing routing model. The calibrated model would

-2-

C'V'
'( ~ I )
V "',;U
.
