This study estimated agricultural consumptive use'of

226,000 acre-feet. Several other estimates have been made, a 5 year field study

to determine actual consumptive use on the project was begun in 1978, and a

draft report completed in July 1983. Recent technical estUnate. reported in a

.
Depertment of the Interior May 1980 report to OMB, are 254,000 acre-feet for

agricultural depletions. In November 1981, it was concluded and agreed by

Interior's Assistant Secretary Land and Water Resources and Assistant Secretary

- Indian Affairs that the project's productive acreage sbould be 110,630 acres,

ratber than tbe 105,000 acres which bad been assumed in tbe past.

Correspondingly, tbe aDnual depletion estimate bas been revised from 254,000

acre-feet to 267,000 acre-feet. Tbe depletion figure of 267,000 acre-feet is an

estimate tbat will be evaluated for technical accuracy.

Jicarilla Apacbe Indian ~

The Southwest Region bas completed an appraisal study for putting to beneficial

consumptive use up to 26,000 acre-feet of water per year on the Jicarilla Apache

Indian Reservation. The study was made under a Memorandum of Understanding

between tbe Bureau of Reclamation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, in response

to a request from the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission that the Secretary

of the Interior reserve 26,000 acre-feet of water from the San Juan River System

for luch use, if found to be economically feasible. Studies to date under pre-

sent guidelines indicate that only up to 3,000 acre-feet consumptive use of

water per year could be justified for M&I use at Dulce, New Mexico. It should

be noted that the Jicarilla Tribe is not in agreement with Bureau of Reclamation

'j

'.,'.
f'e
;~\
t!~-: ;
i"....

"<.
~/

.. ~
,

k
C
l~/'-
~;--"
;;",:
~- ,:,
~f.;)
~ ,"
~:}:i
t~~
H /"':.
(".;
ii);'

t':--!
~~:-
Ji-';\
~t:~
r'" '

~,',;t:,
~~,..;
;),:.,1
f<". .

t~
r'
{~::
[i~,
~ ~$
r. :.-")i
F.::~'
t,/

~'
f :-

r,', ",
~' "-.
;i ,
~i
t..-
~,";
'-',
~

."
J',
ffc
~'
