environmental tradeoffs associated with these alternative uses to be displayed.

The approach taken will be:

1. to determine water-related demands and water availability in

this portion of the basin;

2. to define the amount and character of habitats required to

assure that this area of the Platte River Basin can continue to

~
~
3.
~~
4.

support cranes and other migratory water and marsh bird species;

to determine the relationship between water supply and habitat

availability in this reach of the Platte system; and

to develop and display management alternatives for meeting the

consumptive demands and nonconsumptive requirements.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The Upper Platte River Study wili address and analyze the present and

potential water and related land resources problems, demands, issues, and

conflicts in the study area. Alternative uses of water, both consumptive

demands and nonconsumptive requirements, and related land resources will be

considered and evaluated. Economic and environmental impacts associated with

these alternative uses will be displayed.

Thus, the central goal of the overall effort is to develop factual

~

technical information which can be used to analyze and display various

alternatives for the future management of waters in the Upper platte River

~

drainage. The alternatives to be considered may be structural or

nonstructural in nature. The report presenting these results will be a tool

for making decisions on the management of this important but finite resource.

In order to meet this goal, at least four major objectives must be met.

The first of these is to define the amount and character of habitats required

between Sutherland and Chapman, Nebraska, to maintain the numbers and

-7-
