~

'J

whether the differences in fish movement are the result of different
flow patterns below the dam caused by the construction and operation of
the new turbine installed in the spring of 1993, or different flows
associated with the medium water year of 1992 and the high water year of
1993,

Squawfish radio tracked in 1993 migrating to spawning sites in the Green
and Yampa rivers, These squawfish also displayed home-range fidelity by
returning to the White River in the fall of 1993 followin9 spawning,
Squawfish captured in the spring of 1993 below Taylor Draw Dam and
released 30 river kilometers (rkm) above Kenney Reservoir established
new home-range in historic habitat, remained in this river reach for two
months, and then migrating down the White River to spawning sites in the
Green and Yampa rivers. Squawfish captured below Taylor Draw Dam in the
fall of 1993 after spawning were released 0,8 rkm above the dam in
Kenney Reservoir and swam to the upstream portion of the reservoir, The
telemetry work suggests that squawfish, given the opportunity, may
access and use history home-range above Kenney Reservoir.

The purpose of this study is to assess whether wild adult Colorado
squawfish will use habitat above Taylor Draw Dam before and after
spawning if given the opportunity,

III, Study Goals, Objectives, and End Products:

Goal I:

To assess whether wild adult Colorado squawfish will use
habitat above Taylor Draw Dam before and after spawning if
given the opportunity.

Objective:

o Monitor movement patterns of squawfish following return from
spawning migration,

o Capture wild adult Colorado squawfish below Taylor Draw Dam
and release them 0,8 rkm above the dam to note up- or
downriver movement patterns,

o Document upriver movement above Kenney Reservoir, re-
establishment of home-range in historic habitat above Kenney
Reservoir, and downriver movement through Kenney Reservoir
and over Taylor Draw Dam,

IV. Study Area:

The study area includes the White River from Rangely, Colorado, the area
below Taylor Draw Dam, Kenney Reservoir, and historic home-range above
Kenney Reservoir.

2
