Relationship to Recovery Program/Ranking Factor:

This study relates to the White River action plan element A.l of
assessing habitat and passage need above Kenney Reservoir under the
restore habitat section,

The White River was impounded by Taylor Draw Dam in 1985 creating Kenney
Reservoir, Studies conducted before 1985 documented squawfish use of
the White River above the dam, The dam blocked squawfish movement into
available habitat upstream and reduced the amount of historic home-range
in the White river by 32%, The restriction of upstream movement has
resulted in the stockpiling of squawfish immediately below the dam, As
a consequence the density of squawfish in the area below the dam are
some of the highest in the Upper Colorado River Basin,

The highest density of squawfish in the White River occurred within the
first 1 rkm below Taylor Draw Dam in the fall of 1992 and spring of
1993, The squawfish that returned to the White River after spawning in
the fall of 1993 initially stockpiled directly below the dam, but then
redistributed themselves downriver 4-5 rkm, The reason for the
divergent movement pattern is unknown, The question has arisen as to

1
