After the McPhee and Towaoc Powerplants were added to the <br />project in 1981, further analysis revealed a need to <br />modify their capacities. For the HcPhee Powerplartt, tur- <br />bine design capacity was based on releases of 25 to <br />75 cfs. In 1981, the normal minimum design capacity was <br />a 50-cfs turbine. Since then, Reclamation has determined <br />that more efficient use of the water could be made by in <br />creasing this design capacity to 75 cfs and that addi <br />tional flexibility could be gained by using a combination <br />of two turbines and one generator. Consequently, the <br />capacity of the McPhee Powerplant has been increased from <br />990 kilowatts (kW) to 1,350 kW. A reanalysis of the <br />Towaoc Powerplant revealed that increased capacity could <br />be obtained by using a turbine with less head loss and <br />reduced maximu!'l static head losses. Subsequently, the <br />powerplant capacity has been increased from 10,500 kW to <br />12,200 k\~. <br /> <br />5. Some refinements have been !'lade to the operation, mainte- <br />nance, and replacement of the project since 1977. To pro- <br />vide a time ly and coordinated operation of the water <br />storage and conveyance facilities on the delivery system <br />of the project, a computerized Programmable Master Super- <br />visory Control System would be used to automate the opera- <br />tion. This system would perform selected control func- <br />tions at predetermined times and interpret control func- <br />tions on the Great Cut Pumping Plant; the checks along the <br />Dove Creek, South, and Towaoc Canals; the six sprinkler- <br />head pemping plants; and the two powerplants. In addi- <br />tion, this system would allow monitoring and remote con- <br />trolling of the releases from McPhee Dam. The operation <br />of project canals will be based on a scheduled delivery <br />concept. Irrigators will order water in advance. In <br />addition, pumping plants and checks along the canals will <br />contain instruments to monitor changes in water demand <br />downstream and automatically adjust to meet these changes. <br /> <br />S-5 <br />
