<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />o <br />w <br />(0 <br />Cl <br /> <br />SUMMARY SHEETS <br /> <br />Big Sandy River Unit <br /> <br />LOCATION <br /> <br />The Big Sandy River Unit of the Colorado River Water Quality Improvement <br /> <br />Program generally encompasses the Big Sandy River drainage and adjacent <br /> <br />areas in northwestern Sweetwater County, Wyoming, in the Upper Colorado <br /> <br />River drainage. <br /> <br />PURPOSE <br /> <br />The overall purpose of the unit is to reduce salinity in the Colorado <br /> <br />River system. The Big Sandy River contributes an estimated average of <br /> <br />164,000 tons of salt each year to the river. The salt is dissolved from <br /> <br />saline bedrock and carried to the Big Sandy River by deep percolating <br /> <br />irrigation water. <br /> <br />PLAN <br /> <br />The recommended plan of development for the Big Sandy River Unit would <br /> <br />reduce salt loading to the Big Sandy, Green, and Colorado Rivers and <br /> <br />would develop 12,000 acre-feet of water from the Big Sandy River for <br /> <br />industrial use by Chevron Chemical Company and Texasgulf Chemicals, <br /> <br />Incorporated. A well field would be installed as part of the unit along <br /> <br />the Big Bend area near the Big Sandy River. Saline water collected at <br /> <br />S-l <br />
