Uncompahgre Project Rehabilitation and Betterment (R&B) Program

In 1979, at the request of the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users

Association, Water and Power began a detailed study of the Uncom-

pahgre Project facilities to determine the extent and nature of needed

improvements. The study has been completed and a draft special report

prepared. A final report will accompany Water and Power's request for

rehabilitation and betterment funds for the Uncompahgre Project. Improve-

ments to be made under the R&B program would meet the former Uncompahgre

Project improvement objectives other than salinity reduction, as well as

provide further opportunities for water conservation. The R&B program has

been coordinated with the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit investigation and the

programs supplement one another. District costs associated with the R&B

program and operation and maintenance costs for the Lower Gunnison Basin

Unit will not exceed the repayment capacity of the water users.

Soil Conservation Service Studies

The Soil Conservation Service (SCS), of the U.S. Department of

Agriculture (USDA), is working closely with Water and Power to coordinate

the salinity control programs. Each agency plans, implements, and funds

its own program. In the Lower Gunnison Basin, eight alternative plans

have been developed by SCS for onfarm salinity control. These plans

provide for salt reductions ranging from 65,000 to 420,000 tons per year.

A public involvement effort is underway to identify the alternatives most

compatible with local interests.
