Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association operates and maintains the

project.

Uncompahgre Project Improvement and Extension

Because of the age of the Uncompahgre Project facilities, many

are seriously deteriorated and in need of replacement. The Colorado

River Water Conservation District, Uncompahgre Valley residents, local

and State entities, and others requested that Water and Power under-

take a study on improving and extending the Uncompahgre Project. The

study was conducted and a report presenting the results completed in

1972.1/ Based on study findings presented in the report, P. L. 92-577

of October 27, 1972, authorized Water and Power to conduct feasibility

studies on improving and extending the Uncompahgre 'Project facilities.

Proposed extension of the project formed the basis for a separate feasi-

bility study on the potential Dominguez Reservoir development on the

Gunnison River downstream from the Uncompahgre Project.

The Uncompahgre Project Improvement studies began in December 1973

and were concluded in April 1977 when findings indicated that the improve-

ment plans could not be economically justified under existing criteria.

The objectives outlined for the improvement could only be partially met

by the Lower Gunnison Basin salinity control unit described in this

report, and as a result, the Uncompahgre Project Rehabilitation and

Betterment (R&B) Program was investigated as a possible means of satisfy-

ing needs other than salinity reduction.

C01675

l!
