R. Kuiper, Acting Director
Colorado Water Conservation Board
215 State Services Building
1525 Sherman Street
Denver 3, Colorado

Dear Mr. Kuiper:

I am pleased to send you the data on Ruedi Reservoir which you requested
in your letter of February 6, 1963. ~

The geology of Ruedi Dron and Reservoir is discussed in our report con-
tained 'in House Document No. 353, 86th Congress, Second Session. We
recognized that gypsum was present in the reservoir and stated "As a
matter of judgment, the proposed reservoir will prove satisfactory from
a seepage standpoint, but this conclusion must be checked by deep drill-
ing and detailed geological work."

t

Prior to the Congressional action which gave the Bureau of Reclamation
funds for advance planning for the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project,
Mr. William ~lallory of the Geological Survey advised us that he I~as Iwrk-
ing in Eagle and Pitkin Counties. His geologic researches had revealed
that in 1960, a hole drilled in prospecting for oil ncar Carbondale
(30 miles west from Ruedi Reservoir) had encountered rock salt at a
depth of about one-half a mile. He theorized that salt might be present
beneath Ruedi Reservoir.

Our Regional Geologist spent several days with Mr. Mallory in early
September 1962, studying the geology along the Eagle, Roaring Fork, and
Fryingpan River valleys, as related to our proposed development of Ruedi
Reservoir.

The Fiscal Year 1963 Budget was passed and signed the last part of
October 1962. Before the end of that month, we assigned t\W engineering
geologists to map and study the surface geology of the reservoir area
and 'related pertinent features. Both colored and black and white aerial
photographs, as well as standard engineering geologic methods and tech-
niques, were used in the geologic investigations.
