COLORADO
A WATER SUPPLY CONDITIONS UPDATE
ROM THE OFFICE OF THE STATE ENGINEER; COLORADO DIVISION OF WATER RESOURCES September 1995
ROOM 818,1313 SHERMAN ST.,DENVER,CO 80203; (303)-866-3581
Water supplies remained above average throughout the state during August,as evidenced by the positive SWSI values
in all basins. River flows were high, a continuing effect of this year's delayed runoff and generous contributions to the
ground water table earlier in the summer. Reservoirs ended August with generally above normal storage levels as a result
of reduced demand for their waters. August's temperatures warmed up compared to early summer, and the National Weather
Service reports statewide precipitation was 80% of average.
The Surface Water Supply Index (SWSI) developed by this office and the U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation
Service is used as an indicator of mountain based water supply conditions in the major river basins of the state. It is based
on stream flow, reservoir storage, and precipitation for the summer period (May through October). During the summer
period stream flow is the primary component in all basins except the South Platte basin where reservoir storage is given the
most weight. The following SWSI values were computed for each of the seven major basins for September 1, 1995 and
reflect conditions during the month of August.
September 1, 1995 Change From Change From
Basin SWSI Value Previous Month Previous Year
South Platte +3.1 -0.3 +1.3
Arkansas +2.8 -0.7 +3.1
Rio Grande +2.7 -0.8 +4.6
Gunnison +3.4 +0.4 +5.9
Colorado +3.8 +0.3 +6.1
Yampa/White +1.6 -2.1 +5.2
San Juan/Dolores +3.3 -0.2 +5.8
SCALE
-4 -3 -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 +4
Severe Moderate Near Normal Above Normal Abundant
Drought Drought Supply Supply Supply
•
