• i
COLORADO
t▪ .
WATER SUPPLY CONDITIONS UPDATE
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE STATE ENGINEER; DIVISION OF WATER RESOURCES June, 1993
ROOM 818,1313 SHERMAN Sr.,DENVER,CO 80203; (303)-866-3581
Percent of normal snowpack amounts decreased during May due to dryer weather during the latter portion of the month.
In spite of this decrease the snowpack has remained above average statewide. Above average volumes of runoff are still forecast by
the Soil Conservation Service. So far this spring cool weather patterns have allowed the snow to melt in a manner which has
prevented the flooding which was of concern earlier in the spring.
The Soil Conservation Service reports statewide snowpack at 128% of normal for the end of May. The Gunnison basin had
the highest amount at 180% of normal while the South Platte basin had the lowest amount at 106% of normal.
Statewide reservoir storage was 110% of normal on May 31, with the Rio Grande basin having the highest storage rate at
147% of normal.
The National Weather Service 30 day forecast (June 1) is for below normal temperatures and slightly above normal
precipitation statewide. Their 90 day forecast (June 1)is also for below normal temperature and above normal precipitation over the
entire state. Statewide precipitation was 99% of average during May.
The Surface Water Supply Index (SWSI) developed by this office and the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service is used as
an indicator of water supply conditions in the major river basins of the state. It is based on stream flow, reservoir storage, and
precipitation for the summer period (May through October). During the summer period stream flow is the primary component in
all basins except the South Platte basin where reservoir storage is given the most weight. The following SWSI values were computed
for each of the seven basins on June 1, 1993 and reflect conditions during the month of May.
M 1, 1993 Change From Change From
Basin SWSI Value Previous Month Previous Year
South Platte +1.2 -0.8 -0.2
Arkansas +2.9 +0.7 +1.7
Rio Grande +1.4 -1.6 +1.9
Gunnison +3.5 -0.3 +2.5
Colorado +2.7 -0.6 +3.1
Yampa/White +1.7 +0.2 +3.3
San Juan/Dolores +3.5 +1.1 +1.7
SCALE
-4 -3 -2 -1 0 +1 +2 +3 +4
Severe Moderate Near Normal Above Normal Abundant
Drought Drought Supply Supply Supply
1
