HYDROGEOLOGIC AND GEOTECHNICAL RECONNAISSANCE <br />OF <br />HOMESTAKE MINING COMPANY <br />BULLDOG MOUNTAIN OPERATIONS TAILINGS POND NO. 2 <br />CREEDS, COLORADO <br />Project 80818 <br />As agreed in Proposal 80818, signed August 17, 1978 by Mr. <br />Tom Robertson, Envirologic Systems, Inc. has conducted a recon- <br />naissance hydrogeologic and geotechnical investigation of the <br />Homestake Mining Company, Bulldog Mountain Operations Tailings <br />Pond No. 2, located in Section 1, T 41 N, R 1 W southwest of <br />Creede, Colorado. The purpose of this reconnaissance was the <br />preparation of recommendations for a monitoring plan to guard <br />against ground and surface water pollution, and a monitor plan <br />to provide additional data on the piezometric levels in and <br />adjacent to Tailings Dam No. 2. This report summarizes results <br />of the reconnaissance conducted August 23 and 24, 1978. <br />PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS <br />During the design of the Homestake Mining Company Bulldog <br />Mountain Operations Tailings Pond No. 2, the firm of Lincoln- <br />DeVore Testing Laboratory provided subsurface soils investigation <br />services to the design firm of Davis Engineering Service, Inc. <br />In addition, the firm of Frances-Meador-Gellhaus, Inc. provided <br />embankment design review and construction supervision. During <br />the course of the design and construction, a lack of agreement <br />surfaced between the two soil engineering firms over the sta- <br />bility of a section of the dam between Station 2+00 and 4+50, <br />
