3
Excessive seepage with the possible consequences of piping is our major
concern at this site. Not only has the large amount of seepage devel-
oped concern with regard to the possibility of piping, but the existing
relief well system has reportedly extracted large amounts of sand in the
area around the wells and possibly the foundation. Although the boring
logs give no indications of seepage paths of intolerable size, the
information derived from the logs is not at all conclusive.
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The company should install a foundation grout curtain along the dam
axis to not only curtail the flow of polluted water downstream, but also
aid in filling any voids that could have developed within the foundation.
This will not only strengthen the foundation, but reduce piping potential
as the hydraulic gradient increases with pool development.
2. Other factors mentioned under "Comments and Conclusions" should be
considered by the company.
John L. Odell
Hydraulic Engineer
S phen W.
