Embankment Dams: Understanding Seepage <br />All Dams Leak <br />Seepage is controlled by grain size and compaction. <br />•Large grains (gravels, sands) = low resistance to flow•Fine grains (clays) = high resistance to flow•Flow path must be increased/controlled to dissipate reservoir head pressure <br />(Pt. A) at seepage point exit downstream (Pt. B) <br />Do NOT want uncontrolled seepage on D/S face of dam <br />•Seepage can move soil with it, causing the soil to lose strength (boggy, <br />bulging, sloughing)and causing movement of material from inside the <br />embankment or foundation.•Homogeneous Vs. Zoned Dams.
