An example of ground water movement <br />Assume that an irrigated field is located ¼ mile (or 1320 feet) from the river, and <br />that water moves through the alluvium at 3 feet per day. <br /> <br />1320 feet ÷ 3 feet per day = 440 days. In other words it will take 1 year and 75 <br />days for the water to travel the distance from the field to the river <br /> <br />Therefore, return flow from May <br />irrigation will reach the river in mid <br />July of the following year. <br /> <br />This “re-timing” of flow contributes <br />to increased flow in the river in the <br />dry months.
