SOUTH PLATTE BASIN. July, 1998
Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 2.5 indicates that for June the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BASIN
)asin water supplies were above normal. Reservoir storage, s Surfao.Meter Supply ' "e.tery
the major component in this basin in computing the SWSI 4-
value, was 100% of normal as of the end of May. Storage in 3- :Ala • ._
the major plains reservoirs: Julesburg, North Sterling, and a .
Prewitt, decreased by 4,120 acre-feet during June and are at -• L`
97%of capacity. Storage in the major upper basin reservoirs: 1- * .a I -- _
Cheesman, Eleven Mile, Spinney, and Antero, increased by ° A -
8,564 acre-feet and are at 91% of capacity. The mean daily - -
"'
flow of the South Platte River at the Kersey gage was 1,184 a _2-
l
cfs, as compared to the long term average of 3,527 cfs. Flow
at the Colorado/Nebraska stateline averaged 1,176 cfs. -3-
Several rainstorms and the runoff kept a call off of the -4 , ...... -- ....... .... .. ... .... -----
JAN99 JAN90 JAN91 JAN92 JAN93 JAN94 JAN95 JAN96 JANG7 JAN90
mainstem of the South Platte and many tributaries until the M.1..y5m
latter part of June. The flow in the South Platte dropped
dramatically toward the end of the.month. For example, the
flow of the South Platte near Kersey dropped from over 2,400
cfs on June 10 to less than 400 cfs by the 21st. With lower
flows and hot weather, the demand for water exceeded the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER NR. KERSEY
supply in most basins, with resulting calls.
