RIO GRANDE BASIN
Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 1.6 indicates that for October the RIO GRANDE BASIN
lasin water supplies were above normal. Storage in Platoro, s Surface Neter Supply Index History
Rio Grande, and Santa Maria reservoirs totaled 135% of 4
normal on October 31. Flow at the gaging station Rio Grande
near Del Norte averaged 494 cfs, as compared to the 1961- 3 , '
1993 October average of 420 cfs. The Conejos River near
Mogote had a mean flow of 135 cfs. The National Weather 1
Service reports basin precipitation as 135%of normal during a I-
the month. - i_
Rain and snow in the first half of October increased r'
flow in local streams as well as getting this winter's snowpack -2
off to a good start. Most area gaging stations reported above -3 --
average totals for the month. The average
monthly temperature of 42.3° in Alamosa was 1.2° below
normal. Temperatures ranged from a high of 71°to a low of
13°, with an average daily high of 60° and an average daily R I O GRANDE NEAR DEL NORTE
low of 25°. Despite many g 14
ditches and canals being "called out" for the majority of the 12
season, farm yields were very good. This indicates the heavy
reliance of local irrigators on ground water supplies. Over use 9
of the confined and unconfined aquifers without sufficient 2
recharge is a major concern among area water officials.
1981-1993°CTCBER AVERAGE °CT°ER 1994
Decreed diversions for recharge begin November 1st each year
in an effort to replenish this valuable resource.
Public Use Impacts
Water conditions in the basin did not have a
detrimental impact on public use this month, exepting that Representative Reservoirs
heavy snow stranded many hunters. Local ski areas are taking 4p Rfo"•na.Basin
advantage of this early accumulation as they prepare for _
opening.
-
tr, 25-
ig
-
l v 15
7 10 /\ //,/,
J \' /
Rio Grande P1st..
