SOUTH PLATTE BASIN
Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 1.9 indicates that for October the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BASIN
)asin water supplies were above normal.' Reservoir storage, s ''.tK 51p1y "`.torY -
the key component in this basin in computing the SWSI value, 4
was 99% of normal on October 31. Storage in the major W 3 . . ;; ;.,
plains reservoirs, Julesburg, North Sterling, and Prewitt, - - :-- ,,;. t l : l' .
2 increased by 23,567 acre-feet during October and are at 28% -= a
of capacity. Storage in the major upper basin reservoirs, i 1 `
Cheesman, Eleven Mile, Spinney, and Antero, decreased by i ° - -- 1 - '"'-'
6,593 acre-feet and are at 84% of capacity. The mean daily Ti
riff
flow of the South Platte River at the Kersey gage was 607 cfs, .
a -2
as compared to the 1961-1993 October average of 840 cfs. o
Flow at the Colorado/Nebraska state line averaged 151 cfs. -3
The National Weather Service reports basin precipitation as -4
JANBS JANOS JAN97 JAN99 JANB9 JAN90 JAN91 JAN92 JAN93 JAN94
140% of normal during the month. MONTH/YEAR
While flow conditions continued to be below normal
during October, limited grass hay and alfalfa.irrigation did
occur, assisted by late season precipitation. Recharge and
some storage also continued during the month.
Despite the low stream flows there was not a formal SOUTH PLATTE RIVER NR. KERSEY
call on the South Platte below Chatfield Reservoir during 9° FIRST MINN of THE NATER YEAR
much of the month. The only call on the lower reach was for
recharge at the end of the month. As is usually the case, ,.-j
Denver had a call on the upper reach of the South Platte all
of October.
si
Administrative/Manazement Concerns g
The primary administrative concern at this time is
z°
filling the irrigation reservoirs which were depleted during the
dry summer. There is some question whether these reservoirs 1°
will reach their normal winter storage levels prior to the4
delivery canals being frozen out. If they do not reach normal ° A
1961-19113 OCTOBER AVERAGE OCTOBER 1994
winter levels, good stream flows will be required next spring
in order to fill the reservoirs.
Meetings were held during October between
interested parties concerning the Platte River endangered
species program. These discussions included representatives
from the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service, other federal agencies, Representative Reservoirs
Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. The intent of the 240 South
Platt'River Basin
discussions is to devise a basin-wide program that addresses 22° 7
the needs of both the central Platte River endangered species 2O0
and Platte River water users. t 190 //\
ii 12O-/
h r 100 yN
40 /" 77
2°- -\\/\ // &\ 7-
Dillon Horwtooth Eleven Mlle Charmer' Jackson Barr Lake
® A.Q. 10/31 Contents ® la/31/94 Content.
3
