SOUTH PLATTE BASIN
Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 0.8 indicates that for April the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BASIN
basin water supplies were near normal. Reservoir storage, the 5 Surf"' ter suF,olr I.9.."I"cry
_ major component in this basin in computing the SWSI value, 4_ .
was 101%of normal on April 30. Storage in the major plains ,k _ 1
reservoirs,Julesburg,North Sterling,and Prewitt,increased by 2_I - <
5,638 acre-feet during April and are at 99% of capacity. a J :
r
Storage in the major upper basin reservoirs,Cheesman,Eleven ! ,- ."
Mile, Spinney, and Antero, increased by 6,844 acre-feet and o D =mu■ A •.,I
•
are at 86% of capacity. The Natural Resources Conservation _ 1 ,
Service reports May 1 snowpack as 122% of normal. The .
cr _2_
mean daily flow of the South Platte River at the Kersey gage
was 313 cfs, as compared to the 1961-1993 April average of -0
992 cfs. The National Weather Service computes basin NORTH/YEAR
precipitation as 175% of normal during the month.
The calls on the main stem downstream of Strontis
Springs Dam during April were generally for direct irrigation
during the first 10 days, and then turned to storage and
recharge. The wet conditions completely removed the call SOUTH PLATTE RIVER NR. The precipitation also allowed for significant 1 200
filling of reservoirs on tributaries. Even with the rainfall, 100
there are concerns that reservoirs on tributaries may not fill
since they were so low prior to April and their inlet ditches D
Oct Nov Dec Jan F.O. March Apr II
limit filling rates. Continued wet conditions may be necessary MONTH
to fill these reservoirs. o WET C1993) o DRY c1964J A AVG X 1995
The South Platte Water Rights Management System,
developed with funds from water suppliers and the Colorado
Water Conservation board, is especially helpful in
administration during changing conditions as were REPRESENTATIVE RESERVOIRS
experienced last month. The system allows for access of 2,D sarrai PLATTE RIVER BASIN
stream flow and other information in a timely and user 2,900D—if
friendly format. All of the water commissioners in the South 170
Platte drainage will be working with the system within the : ;50
next month. 140
cF ,„D 20 /
g, -
Public Use Impacts "
The wet conditions did keep many farmers from a V g0 ^
planting their corn during April.
