ARKANSAS BASIN
Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 2.8 indicates that for August the ARKANSAS RIVER BASIN
Sur*"'Water S,K,ply Inds<"'story
basin water supplies were above normal. Storage in
5
Turquoise, Twin Lakes, Pueblo, and John Martin reservoirs 4_
totaled 258% of normal as of the end of August. Flow at the ' •
gaging station Arkansas River near Portland averaged 2,024 -T
cfs, as compared to the 1965-1993 August average of 1,008 y
cfs. The National Weather Service reports basin precipitation • —at 75% of normal duringthe month. G-ELL— Y f- t
-1
Outlook
a -2— '
Stream flows should continue to remain somewhat ' --
above average through the rest of the irrigation season as base 3-
flow has been charged by the large amount of runoff and -4 I
JAN86 JAN87 JAN88 JAN89 JAN90 JAN91 JAN92 JAN93 JAN94 JAN95
subsequent ground water inflows this summer. Reservoir anNTH/YEAR
supplies continue to be excellent as high river flows have
minimized reservoir release demands. Any reservoir
drawdowns should be replaced this coming winter season
allowing the 1996 irrigation season to begin with nearly full
storage conditions. ARKANSAS RIVER NR, PORTLAND
FLOW BY WATER YEAR
Administrative/Management Concerns 11.9
Ground water pumping has been greatly reduced this e.8
season as supplemental supplies were generally not needed.
Matching depletions with appropriate augmentation in 0.6
amount and time continues to be a concern however. New o 0 .5
rules & regulations for the use of ground water in the basin .4
are anticipated to be filed with the Water Court this month. •
These rules will probably be more strict in regards to °3
replacement obligations both in amount and time. °2
0.1
Public Use Impacts
Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb March April May June July Aug Sept
Although there have been unusually abundant water MONTH
O WET(1984) O ORY(1977) p AVG X 1995
supplies this year, most crops appear to be behind normal
growth schedules due to the cool wet spring weather. Also,
there was some significant hail damage to crops in Pueblo
County during August.
REPRESENTATIVE RESERVOIRS
ARKANSAS RIVER BASIN
320
300—
280—
260—
220- \
Z 200-
i 200- \ \
° \ \
180—
140 \
tl - \
120- \
e 120— /BO
/
40
a
John Martin Pueblo Turquoise Twin Lakes
® Avg. 8/31 Contents 1\V 8/31/95 Contents
4
