- w
SOUTH PLATTE BASIN
i
Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 2.8 indicates that for August the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BASIN
)asin water supplies were above normal. Reservoir storage, s Surface Slater Supply Index History
the major component in this basin in computing the SWSI
value, was 113%of normal as of the end of August. Storage - Li,J2k
in the major plains reservoirs, Julesburg, North Sterling, and 3-
..: , 1 ; . •
Prewitt, decreased by 32,572 acre-feet during August and are 2 E a: • ; .4 •A ''
at 41% of capacity. Storage in the major upper basin 1_ -y i 1-_ -,
reservoirs, Cheesman, Eleven Mile, Spinney, and Antero, g 0 - rir `"-
decreased by 10,170 acre-feet and are at 87%of capacity. The ;t
tit
mean daily flow of the South Platte River at the Kersey gage
a _2-
was 545 cfs, as compared to the long teen average of 630 cfs.
Flow at the Colorado/Nebraska state line averaged 165 cfs. -3-
Flow in the both the tributaries and mainstem -, -
JAN67 JANOI JANB9 JAN90 JAN91 JAN92 JAN93 JAN94 JAN95 JAN196
dropped off beginning in August. Nevertheless, conditions for ,,at„w,
users continued to be favorable throughout the month due to
rainstorms and the use of storage water. The senior call for
the whole summer, the 1871 Western Ditch call, occurred
during the middle of August. The Western call is a common
call on the South Platte, and usually occurs much earlier in SOUTH PLATTE RIVER NR. KERSEY
FLOW BY WATER YEAR
the summer in July. 2.8 -
Rain fall during the last half of the month made 2.6 -
supply conditions so favorable that the direct mainstem call 2.'
downstream of Greeley was replaced by a recharge call. This 2
will allow for significant recharge to occur prior to filling the • i.e -
reservoirs next year. Reservoir levels continue to be above o o ,.6 _
average throughout the basin because they started full this W- ,.2 _
spring and less water was needed this summer due to the s 1 - -
iigher than usual river conditions in July. 1 -- - lrl
04
Outlook 0.2 _ -
Irrigation demand will drop off during September as O '----'
Oct Nov Doc Jan Fab NYrch April Nay AIM. The excellent reservoir carryover ,SIT"
and significant recharge now occurring will provide for a good "'°WET 0OM`""' AVG
X 11196
start to next year's supply. It is expected that reservoirs
should be able to fill this winter without much difficulty.
Administrative/Management Concerns REPRESENTATIVE RESERVOIRS
The Colorado Big Thompson (CBT) project's Flatiron 260 SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BASIN
Pumping Station near Carter Lake has been repaired. Water
can now be pumped into Carter Lake from the CBT west slope 22C".\\\-/.
sources. This will help to assure an adequate CBT supply next
year for the southern part of the Northern Colorado Water
 150
Conservancy District including the Little Thompson basin, ' 10
Saint Vrain basin,Boulder Creek basin, and a short stretch of g 120 7
the South Platte downstream of Denver and upstream of the :" 100
mouth ofS ' V P so
% 7
Saint rain Creek.
